What Is a Benefit?
A benefit is a gain or asset realized by the organization and other stakeholders as a result of the outcomes delivered by a project, program or portfolio. Benefits are the reason an initiative is undertaken.
In Practice
Benefits can be financial (revenue, cost savings) or non-financial (improved capability, satisfaction, compliance, sustainability). They are realized over time — often after the project ends — so they must be defined early, tracked and actively managed. Distinguishing outputs (what is produced) from benefits (the value that results) keeps a project focused on why it exists.
PMBOK 8 Context
Benefits are central to the value orientation of the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition and to the value delivery system. A benefits realization plan connects project outputs to the intended value.
FAQ
Benefit vs. output? An output is a deliverable the project produces; a benefit is the measurable value that output enables.
When are benefits realized? Often after delivery, as the outputs are adopted and used — which is why benefits need ongoing management.
