Governance

What Is Governance?

Governance is the framework for directing and supporting an organization through its established policies, practices and decision-making structures. In projects, it defines who decides what, how oversight works, and how value is protected.

In Practice

Project governance sets decision rights, escalation paths, funding and stage gates, and reporting expectations. It answers questions like who approves changes, when phases can proceed, and how risks are escalated. Good governance is proportionate — enough oversight to protect value and ensure alignment, without slowing the team with unnecessary bureaucracy.

PMBOK 8 Context

Governance is a foundational concept in the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition, connecting projects to organizational strategy and the value delivery system. It is exercised through bodies such as the steering committee and change control board.

FAQ

Governance vs. management? Governance sets direction, boundaries and oversight; management executes within them.

Can governance be too heavy? Yes — excessive governance slows delivery. It should be tailored to the project’s size and risk.
