Modeling

What Is Modeling?

Modeling is the creation of simplified representations of systems, solutions or deliverables to understand, analyze or communicate them. A model deliberately leaves out detail to make something complex easier to reason about.

In Practice

Project teams model in many ways: process diagrams, prototypes, financial models, schedule networks, simulations and data models. A good model is fit for its purpose — detailed enough to answer the question at hand, simple enough to be useful. Modeling supports decisions, reveals risks and aligns stakeholders before committing to a full build.

PMBOK 8 Context

Modeling appears among the tools and techniques of the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition and supports analysis across the performance domains. Simulation and prototyping are specific forms; see also prototype.

FAQ

Why use a model instead of the real thing? Models are faster, cheaper and safer to build and change, letting teams learn before committing resources.

What makes a model good? Fitness for purpose — enough fidelity to answer the question, without unnecessary complexity.
