A predictive approach (also called plan-driven) is a way of running a project in which the scope, schedule and cost are defined in detail early and the work then follows that plan. It suits projects where requirements are well understood and stable, so change is managed as the exception rather than the norm.
The predictive approach is the traditional home of techniques such as the work breakdown structure and the critical path method. In the PMBOK Guide (8th edition) it is contrasted with the adaptive approach; a hybrid approach blends both where parts of a project are stable and others uncertain.
