Release

What Is a Release?

A release is one or more components of one or more products that are intended to be put into production at the same time. It groups completed work into a coherent package that is delivered to users together.

In Practice

Release planning decides what goes into each release and when, balancing value, risk and readiness. A release may bundle several iterations’ worth of increments, or — with continuous delivery — be small and frequent. Clear release scope, versioning and communication help users and stakeholders know what to expect and when.

PMBOK 8 Context

Releases are part of the adaptive delivery vocabulary in the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition, supporting the Delivery performance domain. Release planning connects the roadmap to actual delivery.

FAQ
