Risk Escalation

Risk escalation is a response strategy for a risk (threat or opportunity) whose handling lies outside the project’s authority or scope. Instead of managing it within the project, the team refers it to the person or group who can act on it – for example a programme, portfolio or the wider organisation.

Once escalated, the risk is owned at that higher level and is no longer monitored in detail by the project. Clear escalation keeps a team from spending effort on risks it cannot control while making sure they are not simply dropped.
