Value Delivery System

What Is a Value Delivery System?

A value delivery system is a collection of strategic business activities aimed at building, sustaining and advancing an organization. Portfolios, programs, projects, products and operations all work together within this system to create value for stakeholders.

In Practice

Thinking in terms of a value delivery system shifts the focus from delivering outputs to delivering outcomes and value. Projects are not isolated efforts; they are components of a larger system through which strategy becomes tangible benefits. Governance, funding and prioritization connect the pieces so value flows to customers and the organization.

PMBOK 8 Context

The value delivery system is a foundational concept introduced in the PMBOK Guide, 7th Edition and carried into the 8th. It frames the principle that projects exist to enable value, supporting a systems view of the whole delivery chain. See also value proposition.

FAQ

How is it different from a single project? A project delivers a specific result; the value delivery system is the broader network of portfolios, programs, projects and operations that turns strategy into value.

Why did PMI emphasize it? To move the profession from a process/output mindset to an outcome- and value-oriented one.
