Value Proposition

What Is a Value Proposition?

A value proposition is the value of a product or service that an organization communicates to its customers — a clear statement of the benefits a customer can expect and why they should choose this offering over alternatives.

In Practice

A strong value proposition names the target customer, the problem being solved and the specific, differentiated benefit. Projects and products are shaped and prioritized around it: features that strengthen the value proposition earn investment; those that do not are questioned. It aligns the team on why the work matters.

PMBOK 8 Context

The value proposition connects project work to business value, a central theme of the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition. It supports the principle of focusing on value and informs the value delivery system and the roadmap.

FAQ

Value proposition vs. business case? The value proposition states the benefit to the customer; the business case justifies the investment to the organization.

Who owns it? Often the product owner or sponsor, but the whole team should understand and protect it.
