Vision Statement

What Is a Vision Statement?

A vision statement is a summarized, high-level description of the expectations for a product — a concise picture of what the product should ultimately achieve and for whom. It gives the team a shared, inspiring direction.

In Practice

A good product vision statement is short, memorable and outcome-oriented: who the customer is, what need is met and what makes the product compelling. Teams return to it when prioritizing the roadmap or resolving trade-offs, keeping day-to-day decisions aligned with the bigger goal.

PMBOK 8 Context

A clear vision supports the Planning and Stakeholder performance domains of the PMBOK Guide, 8th Edition and the principle of keeping the team focused on value and outcomes. It complements the value proposition.

FAQ

Vision statement vs. mission statement? A vision describes the desired future the product creates; a mission describes the ongoing purpose and how it is pursued.

How long should it be? Ideally one or two sentences the whole team can recall.
