Risk Breakdown Structure

As a project unfolds, the project management team and or the project management team leader will find themselves in positions in which they realize that a particular component as to the project and or a particular facet of that project does in fact come with a set or series of inherent risk. When attempting to organize any and all risks for the purposes of attempting to determine what the best strategy in dealing with them may be, it is often helpful to utilize this tool that is known as the risk breakdown structure. The risk breakdown structure is specifically a tool that represents an organized description of any known project risks that are arranged by a number of categories and characteristics. This risk breakdown structure will display all of the risks as well as some of their possible causes. This tool, when utilized by the project management team and or the project management team leader, is often broken down and tailored by project type.

This term is defined in the 3rd and the 4th edition of the PMBOK.

Quality Management and Control Tools

Project management requires different types of quality planning tools. The Quality Management and Control tools refer to the tools that are used to sequence as well as provide links to the activities identified during project management planning. There are basically seven types of Quality Management and Control tools used as follows:

  • Affinity diagrams: This is similar to mind-mapping that is used to generate ideas that can be linked to create organized patterns of thoughts regarding a particular problem.
  • Process decision program charts: This tool is used to understand goals with respect to the steps on achieving them. It is a great method for contingency planning.
  • Interrelationship diagraphs: It refers to creating relationship of different ideas and scenarios to solve problems.
  • Tree diagrams: It is used to decompose hierarchies like the risk breakdown structure and work breakdown structure. It is also used in visualizing the relationship or hierarchies.
  • Prioritization matrices: This tool helps identify key issues for implementation. It is also used in determining suitable alternatives.
  • Activity network diagram: Also called the arrow diagram, it is used in projecting the scheduling methodologies.
  • Matrix diagrams: It is used to perform data analysis within a matrix to show the strength of the relationship between factors.

This term is defined in the 5th edition of the PMBOK.

Acronyms and Abbreviations

The following list includes all common acronyms and abbreviations that are used in the world of project management. Terms are linked to definitions where available. Please let me know if you miss an abbreviation or an acronym! I will also extend this list from time to time. However, this list is supposed to include only “pure” project management terms and not industry-specific ones (although I might include some of the software world).

Please note that some of the acronyms might have a different meaning in other contexts so you should take them with a grain of salt if you are not sure about the context. You may want to consult Wikipedia for other meanings.

Tom · Jun 26, 2016 ·

It took a bit longer to go through this, but here they are, all the terms that have been added to the 5th edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge, 5th edition. There are some interesting terms in it, terms that we would have thought were already part of the project management world but that had not been added officially. And who would have thought that Emotional Intelligence finally made it into the PMBOK? 238 new terms while some terms also had to leave our beloved PMBOK. Schedule Activity had to leave the PMBOK already in the 4th edition, but what has S-Curve done to the project world that it did not make it into the 5th edition?
